Women, Work and Capital: Does Social Reproduction Theory Explain Oppression?
4:15pm Fri 26 Marmelbourne
One of Social Reproduction Theory's central claims is that women's oppression has been inadequately dealt with by the Marxist tradition. The theory attempts to apply a materialist framework to the problem of women's oppression by focusing on reproductive and household labour as key sites for capitalist accumulation.
Social Reproduction Theory's advocates have produced some useful commentary on the political economy of women's work, but their strategic conclusions lead to class collaboration among women and deprioritising the crucial social role of the workers' movement.
This session will critically assess Social Reproduction Theory from a Marxist perspective and outline a framework for resisting oppression in its totality.
