There is a war on transgender people: in the US, hundreds of bills have been tabled restricting the right to express gender freely; in the UK, transphobia was made legally enforceable by changes to the Equal Rights Act; in Australia, One Nation have decried the "transgender insurgency" that had "penetrated almost every regulatory authority."

For a group that comprises less than 1% of the population, the severity of attacks and oppression can boggle the mind. But the far right did not invent the gender roles that restrict the lives and freedoms of trans people. Capitalism itself requires rigid gender hierarchy, providing the basis for transphobia.

This session will explore the capitalist roots of trans oppression today, and what it will take to fight back against the far right attacks
