The politics of representation

4:15pm Sat 19 Apr
melbourne

About this session

When it comes to challenging discrimination, many people, from left-wing radicals, to progressive liberals to ruling class figures, argue for greater representation of oppressed groups in prominent positions in government, business and academia. But can such an approach end oppression? This talk argues that such token measures do nothing except elevate a few well-connected figures and simply reinforce the underlying structures responsible for oppression. It will also argue for a strategy that can liberate all the oppressed rather than just a tiny handful.
