Solidarity vs identity politics: the Battle of Cable Street 1936

4:15pm Fri 26 Mar
melbourne

What is the difference between our idea of working class solidarity and the allyship of identity politics?

In October 1936, socialists and labour activists brought 300,000 people together to defend the Jewish population and confront the fascists at Cable Street in London’s East End. Called the great epic of the Jewish East End, those who took part never forgot it, and passed the feeling on to later generations.

Janey Stone, co-author (with Donny Gluckstein) of The Radical Jewish Tradition, will present the history of the event and discuss it in the context of the competing concepts of solidarity and allyship.
