30 years of Socialist Alternative: history and perspectives

4:15pm Sun 20 Apr
melbourne

About this session

Socialist Alternative was founded by a small group of comrades in 1995. Since then it has become the largest socialist organisation in Australia with over 600 members across the country. This session will look at how Socialist Alternative developed a series of distinctive positions on how the revolutionary left can be rebuilt out of the wreckage of the neoliberal age that has helped guide us over the last 30 years and has shaped the kind of organisation we have become. Some topics discussed include: the debate over broad left parties, the role of socialists in protest movements, the socialist left and identity politics & students, workers and building an interventionist socialist organisation.

This session is a part of the "Rebuilding the Revolutionary Left" stream at Marxism 2025, a series of sessions that highlights socialist activists involved in building Marxist organisations across the globe.

Speaker: Jordan Humphreys is a member of the National Executive of Socialist Alternative and the editorial committee of Marxist Left Review. He is also the author of Indigenous Liberation & Socialism.
