"Revolutionaries in the nineteen-nineties faced both hope and hard realities. The fall of the Stalinist regimes and a new cycle of anti-war agitation opened space for radical politics, but resistance would not return to the level of the late 1960s and ‘70s. Old certainties broke down as unions and social democratic parties continued into freefall.
