From Howard to today: A history of the modern right in Australia

2:15pm Sat 27 Mar
melbourne

The Australian right has undergone significant transformations over the past three decades, from John Howard’s battles over industrial relations, immigration and national identity to the rise of populist and far-right politics today.

How have the major parties of the right reshaped Australian politics, and what has driven the growth of movements challenging the political establishment from its right flank?

This session will trace the development of the modern Australian right, examining the legacies of Howardism, the influence of neoliberalism, the politics of racism and nationalism, and the changing relationship between the Liberal Party and One Nation. What continuities and ruptures define the right today, and how can we understand its appeal among sections of the working class?
