Confronting the lash: Workers' rebellion in the early Australian colony with Michael Quinlan
11:45am Fri 18 Aprmelbourne
About this session
Resistance by both free and unfree labourers emerged soon after the colony of NSW was established in 1788. Sometimes, this took the form of individuals absconding from their masters; at other times, it involved collective action, including strikes, go-slows, riots and sabotage. Professor Michael Quinlan, author of "The Origins of Worker Mobilisation: Australia 1788-1850" (2017) brings this rich history to light.
