Capitalism and the Environment: Profit vs. the Planet
2:15pm Fri 03 Aprmelbourne
Climate catastrophe isn’t a mistake—it’s a feature of capitalism’s relentless drive for profit.
This session explores how competition pushes corporations to plunder resources, torch the planet, and sacrifice the future for short-term gain. Governments talk about targets and green transitions, but remain bound to fossil capital and endless growth.
Drawing on Marxist analysis, we’ll look at why market “solutions” fail and why only collective struggle can force the transformation we need. We’ll discuss what a socialist alternative could look like: rational planning, collective public ownership, and a society organised around human need, not corporate greed.
