The fight against fascism in Spain was heroic. Workers fought, organised and died together to hold the lines against against Franco’s army under the iconic slogan ¡no pasarán! - they shall not pass. The Stalinised Communist Party was extremely influential, not least because of its monopoly on republican weaponry, and it lead the workers to bitter defeat. This session will explore both the valiant campaigns of workers and anti-fascists on the ground, and the treachery of so many of their leaders.
