About this session
Section of the Black Lives Matter movement in 2020 called for the police and prison system to be abolished. Many of these calls drew on a broader theory of prison abolition advocated by figures like Angela Davis. Since then 'abolitionism' has come to stand in for broader calls for total social transformation with people like Ruth Wilson Gilmore publishing widely on the topic. This session will consider these theories and assess them from a revolutionary socialist perspective.
