Overworked and underpaid: women and neoliberalism

Capitalism in its neoliberal phase has undermined working class living standards via attacks on wages and working conditions and welfare cuts. Because sexism is built into the DNA of the system, women have suffered the double burden of these attacks - at work and in unpaid child- and elder-care and other domestic labour to fill the gaps that welfare cuts create. Alongside the undermining of trade unon struggle has gone a rise in individualism, reflected in neoliberal feminism from Hillary Clinton to Oprah Winfrey. Yet neoliberalism has not been able to obliterate working class women’s resistance.
