Marx and Engels wrote The German Ideology in 1845 and 1846, but it was only published in full in German in 1932, and wasn’t translated into English until 1961. Yet Marx and Engels both considered it a critical work. As Marx later wrote, “We abandoned the manuscript to the gnawing of the mice all the more willingly as we had achieved our main purpose–self clarification.” In this work, Marx and Engels set forth nothing less than the basis of their theory of working-class revolution.
