Was there a golden age of socialist Labor in the 1890s or 1940s under Curtin and Chifley or the 1970s under Whitlam? Is the affiliation of trade unions all that remains of the original outcast organisation, mainly made up of workers, in today’s professionalised, state-funded ALP? This talk considers the experiences, successes and failures of Labor, in and out of office, in order to understand their impact on its current social make-up, policies and practices.
